St. Joseph's Cathedral, a true landmark you can spot from all over the city. It's been perched on its hill since construction kicked off in 1916, with the first services held by 1918—pretty fast for such a massive project!
The first Catholic church in Sioux Falls was St. Michaels and in 1881 the wooden church would burn down and would be replaced by a brick structure this would be the seed that would eventually grow into St. Joseph's Cathedral.
The Cathedral was designed by the talented Franco-American architect Emmanuel Masqueray and would not be completed until after his death (he passed in 1917). This Catholic Cathedral stretches 225 feet long and 120 feet wide, with spires soaring 185 feet high. Each piece of Bedford Indiana Limestone used in construction weighed between 3-5 tons and traveled by rail from Indiana. However, that was just the start because getting them up the hill was another adventure, with horse teams making five trips a day for nearly two years!
