Spook Road

A 3 mile stretch of 264th street in Brandon South Dakota has been called Spook Road for over 50 years but this piece of local legend doesn't have a clear origin story. However, in 1978, near the dawn of satanic panic 80s, Spook Road became infamous when there is a rumor of a cult moving to Brandon and soon mannequin heads, chickens, and even a goat were discovered hanging from a bridge. Fast forward to 1981, a single-vehicle crash claimed a life on this ominous road, attributed to drunk driving. The tragedies continued in 1986 with yet another fatal accident involving a carload of young people. This three-mile stretch, lined with century-old cottonwood trees and several bridges (did we drive over 5 or was it 6?)  is notorious for vandalism and reckless driving. Local legends mix with the reality of its dark, desolate nights and deadly crashes, not to mention its reputation as a hotspot for underage drinking. 

By day, it's a scenic drive, but by night, it takes on a sinister aura. In 2015, the township decided to cut down some of these iconic trees, citing safety concerns due to their overhang and the area's flood-prone nature. This decision stirred emotions among residents and those with cherished memories of Spook Road. Whether it's tales of dead cows, cults, UFO sightings, or just teenage beer parties, Spook Road is rich with narratives waiting to be explored just hop in your car and tell a few ghost stories as you windy along the old road. It helps that Beaver Valley Lutheran Church Cemetery is nearby to add to the ghostly lore. Some say that on particularly foggy nights, ghostly apparitions can be seen wandering among the trees, their ethereal forms barely distinguishable from the swirling mist.
