Driving on Minnesota Ave in Sioux Falls South Dakota during the holiday season you will see a 40 foot tall tree decorated for Christmas. Meet Dorothy's Tree, a gift from Dale Weir to his wife Dorothy, an evergreen (now artificial) that has been decorated every Christmas for several decades. This holiday tradition started as a simple gift between the couple but grew after Dorothy's death to mean even more. Now a staple in the community, 2023 was a difficult time as the 50 foot evergreen began to die and was taken down. This is the first Christmas of the new replacement tree. Located in front of First Methodist Church this tree and the legacy gift left by Dale after his own passing to ensure it continues to be decorated each year for his wife is celebrated each year by the church with a tree lighting ceremony. Ensuring Dorothy's Tree of Hope will continue to be a part of Sioux Falls Holiday History for years to come.
