The State Theater has been a part of the Downtown Sioux Falls landscape since its construction in 1925. The theater opened in 1926 with a $350,000 price tag. The first movie shown was Behind the Waterfront. As we get closer to the theater's 100th birthday it has secured a spot as a Sioux Falls landmark.

There’s a plaque on the front of The State Theater from the Historic Facade Easement Program. The city decided to help restore the exterior of the Theater in 2006.
A lot of people who have lived in Sioux Falls their whole lives know The State Theater has gone through a renaissance. After closing in 1990 the future of the theater was uncertain until momentum finally picks up for restoration to become a modern movie theater started in the early 2000’s with The State Theater reopening in 2020 now with comfy leather seats and a 4K projector.
The photogenic marquee that we know and love today would be added in 1942, though the digital sign wouldn't come along until 2016.
Restoration is still ongoing with more work to be done on the second level.
